03. The Value of Home Care
Opting for in home health care can seem like the more difficult and more expensive option. The question then becomes is assisted living or home care less expensive? The general rule of thumb is that if 40 hours or less per week of paid home care is required, then home care is a less expensive option than assisted living. However, there are many factors that can easily change this equation such as one’s province, whether they rent or own their home or if they require additional services in assisted living such as Alzheimer’s care.
04. Funding Options and Care Rates for Home Care in Ontario
Home care in Ontario can be publicly funded by the government or paid for privately by an individual. Most of the time, the government will cover at least part of the cost of home care services. In fact, figures from Statistics Canada show that 91% of households reported no out-of-pocket costs for home care nursing services, and 79% reported they didn’t have to pay for other home care services (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and nutrition counselling). However, the amount of publicly funded care might not be enough for all of the home care needs, so individuals often supplement by purchasing additional private care. Service rates vary across the country, the average rate for care in Ontario is between $29.00 to $40.00 per hour for home support, personal care and/or companionship. Professional services including nursing and therapy are more depending on the type of services – especially Alzheimer’s/Dementia services typically between $50 and $60.00 per visit.
05. Minimum Required Hours of Service:
At Health Meadows we want to dedicate the proper time to provide exceptional quality care while never making our CarePROs feel like less than our priority. As such we require a minimum of 3 hour care per visit. Exceptions can be made if you require less but are on a client-to-client basis. #6 Long-Term Care Insurance --> Change to: What's the best choice I can make when choosing a home care agency in Ontario?
